Dolby Digital and Pro Logic II: The built-in DTS and Dolby Digital decoder eliminates the need for an external decoder by processing all six channels of audio information into a 5.1 surround sound experience. You'll enjoy a surround sound experience with an astoundingly natural sense of ambience and dynamic realism. Dolby Pro Logic II provides five channels of surround processing from any stereo source so you can even enjoy you favorite CDs or music from a portable audio source in surround sound.

HDMI switching: HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interfacing) switching on a receiver allows you to connect multiple HDMI output sources (e.g., DVD players) to output a video signal using a single cable, making operation and connection easier.

1080p pass-through: Powerful HDMI connectivity allows for high-quality, uncompressed high-definition video to pass through directly to your HD-capable television.

AM/FM radio: Enjoy all of your favorite radio stations with the built in tuner, and switch easily between them using the 30 programmable presets.

iPod ready: Experience music, photos and videos from your iPod, while simultaneously charging it using the optional ASD-3W iPod dock.

XM Radio® ready: Connect to more than 150 channels of uninterrupted music, news, sports, talk and entertainment with XM Satellite Radio. Paid subscription and antenna are required (sold separately).

Multi-room capability: Add an amplifier and a second set of speakers and you can play different sources in two rooms, while controlling the volume independently.

Compressed Audio Restorer: This technology allows for MP3/WMA/AAC compressed audio formats to reproduce higher frequency range and deeper bass sound.

Audyssey MultEQ®: This technology detects speakers, and then sets levels, delays and crossovers, as well as measuring room acoustics. Using the receiver interface, it takes up to six measurements around the listening area and uses high-resolution equalization filters for satellites and subwoofers.

The AVR-788 delivers power and performance and is ready to take on HD video sources as its video circuitry now has HDMI v1.3a audio video capabilities supporting deep color video signals and digital surround audio signals. This makes ease of connection and operation a snap for the beginner or expert user. Attention to audio detail and accuracy has been improved with the addition of Audyssey MultEQ processing, assuring audio room balance even with difficult acoustical conditions. Dolby Digital and dts Digital signals are masterfully decoded and reproduced yielding stunning surround sound presence like never before. Calibration has been simplified using the plug and go concept with the supplied microphone. Using the optional ASD-3W/3N iPod docks allows for network capability, allowing more sources to be played back from devices on your home network. Additionally the AVR-788 can accommodate two source two zone control for enhanced audio installations.

I first purchased the AVR-688 and was pleased with the sound quality and features. However the instruction manual requires patience, its not very reader friendly. After reading the great reviews the Onkyo TX-SR605 received. I decided to return the Denon and see if the Onkyo lived up to its reviews. IT DOESN'T. Compared to the Denon, everything about the Onkyo seems cheap. The sound quality is very metalic, not warm like the Denon. I returned the Onkyo and upgraded to the Denon AVR-788 and couldn'tbe happier. Don't believe the Onkyo hype.

Great sound, difficult manual, runs hot

Hookup is strait forward and sound is great. The microphone and calibration routine are great features. The manual is very difficult to follow, with many references to other sections and dead ends, 'go to the other component's manual'. The settings don't seem to hold reliably through power downs and configurations that were working at powerdown don't work at power up, even after only a few minutes. A work around is memory setting, but they only hold for about a week. The unit runs very hot and should be at the top of the stack. Would I recommend it? Yes, even with these issues. Blu Rays sound wonderful.

I recently got a Denon 688 only to discover that the HDMI connections only pass through video, so for my PS3 I had to use HDMI for video and optical for sound.
I ended up returning the unit and bought the 788.
Could not be happier! I have my PS3 and TIVOHD connected to the receiver and one HDMI cable (bough online at another store) to my big screen TV and it works great.
The receiver will automatically pick the best sound mode for each input, so if it detects a Dolby digital, it will set your sound as DD, if not it will use Dolby Prologic.
WHat a difference watching BluRay movies with full 5.1 dolby digital surround. Is amazing.

If you have a PS3 and a TV with HDMI inputs, this is the best receiver you can get for the money.
